About Lee Woodman

LeeWoodman.co.nz is the online space of Lee Woodman, a qualified builder and joiner (and amateur artist) based in Nelson, New Zealand.

Its always hard to write about yourself,  and when it can be accessed by anyone who wants to, it doesnt make it any easier! however, with the main drive in the short term to achieve some skills in communication, I guess no better place than here to try to explain where I am heading, what interests me, and some background.

I was born and raised in Richmond, Nelson, in a big family in what I would call a ‘cult’, the Exclusive Brethren church. It was a good upbringing, and I feel very lucky to have been raised in a pretty  ‘old fashioned’ way. However, as I grew up I believed there was more to find out about life than I was ever going to learn living within the boundaries of an authoritarian regime, and so I left. This was a major jolt and the single most life changing, eye opening move I could ever had made. It changed my views and appreciation for life in dramatic ways.

During this time and in the following years I completed an apprenticeship in joinery/cabinetmaking, and after about six years changed tack to work in the building industry. In 2003 I started my own company and in the years since have completed some large alterations and renovations, and some new architectural projects designed by Irving Smith Jack Architects.

Building is inspiring to me in alot of ways, it can at times be a very creative occupation, and enormously satisfying to complete a beautiful, well designed home on what once was a bare section.

Still, the level of  unnecessary paperwork and overstressing of safety protocols in the industry at large has drained some of the fun out of the trade, and after 15 years in the building and joinery field,  its time for a new challenge to keep  my mind busy.

In 2010, I intend to study Design and Philosophy at Victoria University, Wellington, and will see where that leads. I am interested alot in art and design, and how it affects us when we are exposed to it (or lack of exposure to it), I hope I will have more to say on this subject as I begin to study,  so for now I cant explain much more on this topic. But watch this space!

This website is a new project and is a work in progress, I intend to add more pages and galleries showing work I have done or am interested in,  and hopefully some art will make it to this website too!

Bye for now, Lee
