Blog 001

OK, time to start writing down some stuff, I have been waiting to see how the blog works for design school, and seeing how that seems to be for our projects, assignments, etc, I think it would be better to start one here, a personal one, more a informal rambling of my journey here at Victoria University, Wellington, studying design and philosophy. This will be a learning tool for me as much as anything, a way to remember and record thoughts, ideas and general highs and lows!

Today is Wednesday, the third day of the school year, I have had one lecture in each of my subjects and have enjoyed each of them, now and starting to get an idea of the workload this trimester (although only two trimesters in the year for most students). I reckon I will be pretty busy, both core design courses have 3 projects/ assignments, philosophy has 3 tests/exams, and writing has three assignments (two small, one larger). As I understand these are all to be completed at different dates before mid June.

I have just come from Design 111 (principles and ideas of design) where we had a basic introduction by way of lecture and presentations…its inspiring to think how everything that is manmade around us, things we use, things we see, or no longer see and generally don’t give any thought to, are all designed. Everything manmade has been conceived, designed, developed, and manufactured one way or another.. to achieve some function, or to maybe just look pleasing to the eye, and hopefully both! Some of it is done well, a lot of it not so well! It is another eye opener to me, to see things again from a new fresh perspective, to pull back and see what I haven’t seen before and probably won’t see again when not thinking about it!

Well the lecture finished early today, as most classes have been this week. Seems like the first week is mostly getting people to settle into the correct classes, and seeing it is a logistical nightmare to organize the three main campuses, Kelburn (Humanities, Social Sciences, Main Admin.) with Pipitea (Law, Politics?) and Te Aro (Architecture, Design) with each other, its no wonder it takes a week to sort out. My next lecture is philosophy, at Kelburn, so I will soon start the walk up the eternal steps which lead to the never ending incline which flatten out finally, just enough to build a mass of buildings, paths and overbridges that form Kelburn campus.

Here is my Design blog for the DSDN 101 course I am doing.. I understand all our projects have to be presented from here…but I will find out more detail along the way!
