Catch a Star is a Christmas commission by Nelson City Council within Nelson’s Christ Church Cathedral. I was asked to do something around or inside the Cathedral that was xmas themed. However, because I am averse to xmas generally, I thought I would subvert the concept slightly and use Super Mario as a theme as he was always in search of the Star too right?

Hung 11m high in the Nave, the installation consisted of 3 threaded box platforms, a staircase, three drafting film boxes, three ladders and one large gold star.

The congregation adored this work and applied their own interpretations; the staircase being the ‘stairway to heaven’ the three boxes and ladders representing the 3 wise men and their respective gifts, and so on.

Catch a Star was re-installed three years in a row until I called Game Over.
